The most fertile agricultural land in Britain is concentrated in a long strip, some 50 miles from east to west at its widest, stretching from the Vale of York to South Essex. Of this, the very best land is found around the Wash and in the Fens and along the banks of the Humber Estuary and the River Ouse. If you want to grow vegetables, this is one of the best places to come, and this is where I headed after I left Harry and his potato growers.

I arrived at Greenside Farm one breezy July morning. The farmhouse itself was a handsome building overlooking the green in the village of Rawcliffe, which sits on the Ouse floodplain to the east of Goole. Beryl Sykes invited me in for coffee and before we went to look at the crops we chatted about the history of the farm. From time to time we were joined by her son Patrick, an energetic young man who gave the impression that he was always on the move, but it wasn’t until midday that her husband Alan appeared. He had been out in the fields, hoeing all morning, and he had returned for what Beryl described as the highlight of their day, which was lunch, or dinner as it is called in the north.
